Florida State Council Awards Knight of the Year to Michael Scavelli
Michael Scavelli, FN, PGK, FDD from Fr. Lopez Council 5737 in Pinellas Park, Florida, was named Knight of the Year by the Florida State Council. The award was presented on 29 May 2016 at the 112th Florida Jurisdiction State Convention in Orlando, Florida. Alongside Michael was his wife, Lisa, when State Deputy, Don Goolesby presented Michael with his award. On hand were the Florida State Council officers, State Chaplain Very Reverend Canon Thomas Skindeleski, several Past State Deputies, District Deputies and several hundred council delegates with their wives.
Michael has over 26 years of service to Fr. Lopez Council, 8 of which he served as Grand Knight. He is currently the Faithful Navigator for Mary Queen of Priests Assembly 3195 and has held a number of state positions including 4 years as District Deputy. He is currently a member of the First, Second and Third Degree ceremonials teams. Needless to say, Michael is well known throughout the state for his dedication and service to the order. He is a brother with exemplary character.
Throughout this past year, Michael has continued his service to the church and our council despite his battle with third stage colon cancer. Michael served his church as usher and created illuminated displays along the street between the Sacred Heart Church and its parish center. The Christmas display included an illuminated Eiffel Tower in memory of the victims of the recent Paris attack. The Easter display included a life size outdoor Stations of the Cross for parishioners to traverse during Lent. Michael served the council by managing the hall kitchen for all events and fund raisers including refreshments after council meetings. Michael prepared meals for the hundreds that attended the Peace Be With You Radio fundraiser and Feast of St. Joseph celebration at Sacred Heart Church. For the first time since becoming a Sir Knight, Michael was unable to march with the annual Pinellas Park Christmas parade Color Corps owing to his condition. Nevertheless, Michael helped direct the construction of our two council floats and remained behind to prepare refreshments for our parade participants upon their return.
The fact that, after the convention award presentation, Michael made it back to take his place as cashier at the Council Bingo later in the afternoon is a testament to his commitment to his council.
Of the nearly 54,000 Knights of Columbus members in the Florida Jurisdiction, the State Council chose Michael as the “best of the best” for Fraternal Year 2015/16. To Fr. Lopez members who know Michael, it comes as no surprise that he is worthy of this high honor and we thank the State Council for selecting our nominee, Michael Scavelli, as the Knight of the Year for the Knights of Columbus, Florida Jurisdiction. We thank Michael for his continued service to his church, his council and the order and we thank Fr. Lopez Council Chancellor Delmar Dunn who was pressed into service by driving Michael and Lisa to the convention to receive his award from Pinellas Park.
We congratulate Michael for this honor and we continue to pray for his recovery.
